How to Sauna

(A gentle guide to doing absolutely nothing — very well.)

If this is your first sauna, welcome. If you’re a seasoned sauna-goer, you already know the secret: there is no perfect way to sauna.

The goal is simple — warm up, slow down, cool off, repeat, and feel amazing afterwards.

Here are a few tips to help you get the most out of your session.

1. Arrive hydrated

Sauna makes you sweat — a lot. Drink some water before and after your session to stay hydrated.

2. Sit back and relax

Once inside, sit or lie comfortably on a towel.
Most people stay in the sauna for 5–12 minutes at a time, though up to 20 minutes is generally considered the upper limit.

Listen to your body — when it feels right to step out, step out.

3. Steam (löyly) – the magic moment

Water poured onto the hot stones creates a wave of heat called löyly — the heart of the sauna experience.

A little goes a long way. Pour slowly and enjoy the rising heat.

4. Cool down

Step outside and allow your body to cool down naturally. Fresh air, a cool rinse, or simply sitting quietly for a few minutes works perfectly.

Cooling down is just as important as the heat.

5. Repeat if you like

Many people enjoy 2–3 rounds of sauna and cooling. Each round feels different, and by the end your body will feel relaxed, light, and wonderfully calm.

6. Sauna is not a competition

Some like it hotter, some like it shorter, some like to chat, some prefer silence.

All approaches are welcome.
The only rule is to respect others and the space.

The real secret

Sauna isn’t really about heat.

It’s about slowing down, breathing deeply, letting the mind quieten, and giving yourself a small pocket of stillness.

Everything else is just warm wood and steam.
